The Paisley Puzzle

After my article about him appeared in Gallery, Nagell sent the publisher a disclaimer. “As author Dick Russell knows very well,” he wrote, “following my acquittal in 1968 on what can only be called trumped-up charges, I have never had any ‘story’ to tell anyone (let alone to tell a journalist or a Congressional committee) about my past intelligence activities, Lee Oswald, or any events which may have led to the assassination of the President. And, after what happened to me at the hands of a corrupt judicial system and a twofaced Administration, I couldn’t care less about such matters.”

Maybe he had to say that, I thought. Two years later, Nagell agreed to meet with me again. And we spoke intermittently by phone and exchanged further correspondence.

One envelope from Nagell, that had shown up in my mailbox at TV Guide in October 1978, was a Xerox of a newspaper clipping. CIA MYSTERY DEATH: EX-DEPUTY DIRECTOR’S BODY FOUND FLOATING IN BAY, it was headlined. The body was that of a man named John Paisley. Nagell typed in these words above the article: “10/3/78 Re: Richard Case Nagell’s Letter to Director of Central Intelligence, Certified Mail Receipt No. 293838, dated May 17, 1976.”

I did not know what that letter had contained, but Nagell’s tip was enough to put me on the trail of John Paisley. The article, also for Gallery Magazine, appeared in the summer of 1981.
